Sapporo
Sapporo is the fifth-largest city in Japan by population with a little of two million people and the third-largest by geographic area. It is the capital of Hokkaido Prefecture, which is the large north island. It is the one island that is only one prefecture and the northern most in Japan. Sapporo is known for the Sapporo Snow Festival which draws more than 2 million tourists from around the world. The city is also home to the Nippon Ham Fighters baseball team which has been managed the last five years by Trey Hillman, a Christian from the USA, who has boldly shared his faith with both team and fans.
William Smith Clark who was the president of the Massachusetts Agricultural College (now The University of Massachusetts, Amherst) came to be the founding vice-president of Sapporo Agricultural College, which is now Hokkaido University for eight months from 1876 to 1877. He taught academic subjects in science and lectured on the Bible as an "ethics" course, introducing Christian principles to the first entering class of the College. When he left he told his students, "Boys, be ambitious (for Christ)".
