Cold Hands, Warm Heart
December 6, 2009
Born and raised in Texas and Louisiana respectively, Kevin and I were not well acquainted with living in snowy places when we first arrived in Sendai City in August 2005. Sendai however sees snow every winter. This is an aspect of living in Sendai that we are definitely missing this year as we are temporarily back in the Texas for our stateside assignment. Besides providing great winter-wonderland play for our kids, shoveling snow in colder months in Sendai was also a great way to visit with neighbors. One of the very first neighbors to welcome us upon our arrival in Japan was Maya-san (pictured). She, her husband, and twenty-something year old daughter lived right next-door. Our first year Maya-san came over nearly every week to check on us—she knew we had little Japanese-speaking ability then and was particularly concerned about that. When she’d come by, she always came with treats for the kids or a tasty Japanese dish for us to try. Later as our language ability increased, we were able to share with her the story of Christ’s birth at Christmastime. We shared Christ (and some of our American food dishes) with her at various times throughout the four years (2005-2009) of our first term.
Thank you for giving through your church to the Lottie Moon Christmas Offering, so that we can be in Sendai, Japan sharing Jesus with folks like Maya-san in their heart language. Please pray that just as Maya-san warmly welcomed us into her neighborhood and life that she will just as warmly welcome Jesus into her neighborhood and life. Please pray that she will receive forgiveness from sin and be brought into a right relationship with her Creator. “He who receives you, receives me, and he who receives me receives the one who sent me.” (Matthew 10:40 NIV)
