Happy New Year from Utsunomiya

January 10, 2010

We thought we would be welcoming the New Year quietly in the warmth of our apartment.  But we decided to venture out in the freezing cold to see if anything was happening in our city.  It surprised us to see some streets closed off, many food stalls set up for all-night business, and a crowd lining up at 11 pm in front of the main shrine.  We went back out this morning and the photo below is the same image we saw last night, except this one in daylight where you can see it better.  Last night there were mostly young people; today there were families.  We stood away and just prayed that these people would see the meaningless and hopelessness of their tradition.

Each Christmas season, Gail delights in the beautiful illumination.  But in Rev. 21:23 it says, “And the city has no need of sun or moon, for the glory of God illuminates the city, and the Lamb is its light.”  Please pray with us as we begin this new year that the “glory of God” will one day illuminate our city and the Lamb will be its light.

Thank you for your continued support of us and your desire to see the Japanese come to salvation.  May God bless you anew with more of Himself in 2010.
