Fukuyama

“The Rose City”

Fukuyama City, (Foo-koo-yah-mah) nicknamed “The Rose City” is located on the eastern border of Hiroshima Prefecture on the delta of the Ashida River in west central Japan. As the second largest city in the prefecture with 465,000 residents, approximately 0.5 percent of the population may be Christian.

After World War II the city was almost completely burned to the ground. A group of local residents were burdened over the unsettled mood of the city. They felt that flowers soothe the heart, so they sprang into action by planting and nurturing one thousand rose seedlings. Now these strong beautiful, blooming rose bushes have multiplied to over 400,000 plants of 280 different species filling the city with a magnificent fragrance each May and November. The city’s buses, shopping areas, cultural halls and other facilities have all been christened with “rose” related nicknames.

Fukuyama City actively promotes exchanges with other cities both within and outside of Japan. The exchanges include a wide range of fields including culture, friendship, goodwill, education and industry. Its desire to become an internationally minded city will be enhanced as Fukuyama relates to cities in Asia and other countries.

Fukuyama City Steelworks

Fukuyama is a major force in central Japan’s traditional industries such as producing fiber products, wood works, tatami omote (outer rush mats) and the Japanese koto (harp). In addition to these, Fukuyama is also the home of the NKK’s (Nippo Kokan Corporation) Fukuyama Steelworks, the largest steelwork plant of its kind in the world. This production of steel led to its destruction in WWII.
